Approaches

Positive Psychology

I use positive psychology approaches in my work. There is a misunderstanding that this is about being blindly optimistic despite the evidence around us. However it is more about making our thinking realistic and incorporating the good as well as the bad. Oftentimes we put so much focus on the negative that we feel helpless in situations, but using positive psychology can enable us to explore what we can do, rather than what we can’t. It’s an empowering approach that encourages individuals to play to their strengths and value themselves.

Neuroscience

When we see the brain as an information processing device, we can start to understand that it can only work with the data we give it. This is why when we only see the negative, we can feel more helpless. Understanding the brain’s capacity for learning new perspectives and behaviours can help us see how we can do things differently and develop new skills. We can develop new neural pathways so we can respond in more positive and healthier ways.

Self-Compassion

Compassion-focused approaches help us to be reflective about ourselves, rather than self-critical. It helps us to be accountable and open to learning about ourselves so we can grow and evolve, without being punitive and harsh.

In sessions this can help us to explore in a safe way what needs to change and how we can move towards our goals at our own pace, building confidence, resilience and self-acceptance.
